Leanie Brits, Counselling Psychologist

Leanie has long been interested in how people shape meaning and purpose from life challenges. She noticed early on that self-defeating and ingrained life stories limit people’s potential for life satisfaction. Narrative therapy shaped her work because it makes room for transformational and empowered personal life stories.

She completed her Master’s degree at the University of Pretoria in 2010, with distinction. In 2011, she completed her 12-month internship at the Tshwane University of Technology. Her postgraduate training included work at Kalafong Hospital in the HIV and AIDS Child and Adolescent Clinic. She also gained experience in student counselling settings and at an Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centre.

Before her Master’s degree, she completed a six-month career guidance internship at the University of South Africa and continued working as a career counsellor. She draws from her career development training, and it informs her work. People often arrive with uncertainty about their study or career direction, life goals and purpose.

Leanie currently works at a Higher Education Institution in the Western Cape. She provides psychotherapy and psychosocial interventions for students, adolescents, and adults. Her work includes career development and career pathing, as well as developmental and wellness interventions. She coordinates a BPsych student practicum programme and supervises practicum students. She also participates in peer supervision and case management. She spearheads university mental health and wellness projects and supports learning programmes presented to groups and classes.

If you are considering therapy, the first step is usually a conversation about what has been happening and what you want to change.
